It also seems to include some enhancements that we didn't have before such as support for attachments and uploaded photos. I'm still getting used to the control panel, but they appear to have done some good work here.

I just wish there was more activity, but you can't force people to discuss things, epecially when there isn't much new going on these days. I've been having a good discussion about Tivo over on AVS in the HOTP thread. If Cox doesn't show me something early in the new year, I might eat crow and become a Tivo convert. I'd be tempted to switch now, but there are new Tivo's on the way and tru2way for Cox, so I'm stuck at the moment between the old and the new. Hoeever, a good Christmas discount, like they offered for Father's Day, could entice me to get at least 1 regardless of what the future promises.

I hear you, I have an old SD Tivo that my kids use, and am tempted to go that route again for HD, the COX HD DVR has to be the worst I have ever seen. The UI is horrible. I was living in PA for a about a year and used the FIOS DVR and that was not as good as the Tivo UI, but 100x better than the COX one. For the price we pay to rent the box, you would think they could have invested in a better system. I would switch now, but I would miss having access to On Demand, and the cost of renting just an HD set top is way too much to justify.

Well, they do have a new UI coming that should make things much better. Even so, the cost of the Cox DVR is still too much, though there are places where they are even more. I have since ruled out Tivo simply because of how they do multi-room. They copy recordings from one unit to another rather than stream them. Unfortunately, Cox applies copy flags quite liberally and they defeat Tivo multi-room for all but local channels. The solution I'm considering is Moxi with their Mates. Moxi streams recordings to the Mates in other rooms. They have a 3-tuner unit and the Mates are now fully functional including live TV and recordings. You can actually have 3 programs recording while you are watching 3 other recordings. It also has the ability to expand storage to 6.5T and I know at least one person who has 8T running.

The 3-tuner with 2 Mates costs $1,000 plus whatever you need to get networking to the Mates, either Powerline or MoCA adapters. It comes with lifetime guide service. To get that same capability, it takes 3 Cox DVRs or 3 Tivo HDs. Cox DVRs do not yet have multi-room and I suspect when they do, they will be hindered by the copy flags just like Tivo. Tivo HDs are $250 plus $400 for lifetime service for the first and $300 for each of the other 2.

Now, that doesn't mean the Moxi is perfect, but it's worth checking out. There is a large thread on AVS that has a great comparison spreadsheet.
